During this current pandemic, we certainly miss several things, sports being one of them. I enjoy betting on sports, and it is different when I cannot attempt to lose money on betting, however, virtual betting may solve that.

With that said, I became curious about virtual sports betting one day and decided to look into it on Bet365’s website. I chose to view how virtual basketball works and what exactly you could bet on, and believe me, there are vastly different betting options one can select.

It typically operates how you may think. You select whatever you want to bet on, whether it’s a team’s spread or the games total over/under. Even then, there are options to bet on what the final score will be for both teams (for example, you can bet on if the total points scored will range between 180-189 or 190-199). Of course, you will be able to bet on whatever you typically do during live games, but you may need to change your strategy. Since the games are simulated, scores can be random. However, you could always track a particular team and their scores against other teams.

You are even able to watch the virtual basketball game simulation, which typically lasts around a minute and a half to two minutes long. It may not necessarily be exhilarating to watch, but it is a nice feature, nonetheless.

When I took a first look into virtual basketball, I questioned myself, is there a feasible betting strategy to use? Well, I decided to analyze 100 different virtual basketball games in 5 game intervals. This means I would analyze five games at a time, rather than 100 games consecutively. Here is what I found:

  • When a game’s total points scored is 225 or above, the next game typically goes under 64% of the time.
  • When a game’s total points scored is 202 or below, the next game typically goes over 33% of the time.
  • When a game projects the total points scored to be 211.5+/-, games go under 78% of the time.
  • Where favourites are -600+, the total game points go over 40% of the time.
  • Games that have favourites between -400 to -499, the team’s points will go over 80% of the time.
  • Games that have favourites between -300 to -399, the team’s points will go over 71% of the time.
  • Games that have underdogs between +100 to +199, the team’s points will go over 39% of the time.
  • Games that have underdogs between +300 to +399, the team’s points will go over 25% of the time.
  • Games that have underdogs between +400 to +499, the team’s points will go over 29% of the time.
  • Games that go over in total points scored between both teams have a streak of 2.31.
  • Games that go under in total points scored between both teams have a streak of 2.6.

The picture above represents the data I would collect for each game.

There are several different betting strategies I found to be feasible. Of course, I only have analyzed 100 games, which is a small sample size in my belief. There is always the possibility that the strategies may no longer be feasible. But I like to look at sports betting as a stock. As long as you have a strategy that goes up more than it goes down, it is feasible.

Although these are the strategies I analyzed, I could have broken down my data more. There are going to be several angles that I did not look at and should have, but I did not want to spend hours on end to further break down the data. I took this on as a project that I found interesting and was curious about.

For myself, I am not an overly huge gambler, but I will throw in a little cash to see if I can potentially get an excellent return. That said, I lost money and will not lie about it, but the amount I lost is minimal. That amount is $2, and that was early on when I was analyzing the games. Although, if and when I may bet on virtual basketball, I would personally use only two or three strategies, as using more may potentially be time-consuming.

So overall, can you earn any money by betting on virtual sports? Yes, I would like to believe so even though I lost a bit of money. Of course, everyone should do their due diligence when it comes to gambling and betting. Gambling can be a severe addiction, so please do so responsibly.
